Imbedded within the typical lower-rhine countryside with its wide fields, green areas and wooded spots situated between the rivers Rhine and Maas, approximately 35 km in northwest direction of Krefeld you will find our idyllic Kevelaer with a population of roughly 28.000 inhabitants, including surrinding villages.
For more than 360 years the cityscape has been impacted by pilgrimage to the Virgin Mary. The Gnadenkapelle with a painting of the „Schutzmantelmadonna“ -thats how the conventionalised Virgin Mary is called- became well known beyond the country´s frontiers. Every year thousands of native and foreign believers pilgrimage to the „Trösterin der Betrübten“ ( comforter of the dejected).
Furthermore Kevelaer became more and more attractive for one-day-torists during the recent 20 years. Visitors appreciate the clear layout, the impressive traditional facades and our nice little shops offering high-quality craftwork and arts. Even inhabitants of bigger cities of the region are attracted by „Unverwechselbar Kevelaer“.
Several excursions may be set off from Kevelaer:
Arcen, a neat and attractive dutch village next to the banks of river Maas, offers attractive gardens of the local castle. Former romanian Xanten, next to the Rhine, presents ruins and a lot of vivid history of the former life, which might be very interesting for kids.

Irrland- a labyrinth made of corn plants is far more than that. For families with kids its ideal to spend a whole day- old-fashioned airplanes- playgrounds-sportive activities a XXL kids shute and picknick facilities make it a real value for money. Water enthusiasts may prefer a tour at the inland port in Duisburg with a visit to the well-known zoo.
